FAQs

General

WAMBIZ builds private social networks for schools, colleges and universities so teachers and students can communicate, collaborate and share educational content in a familiar but safe and secure environment.
Our platform looks and feels like social media guaranteeing student engagement and thus retention, but with controlled access and a managed audit trail also protects your teachers’ professional integrity. We don’t blur the lines between school and social life that can often dangerously occur on a platform like Facebook.
URLs to video links, for example on YouTube, can be posted and if a user clicks on the URL the link will open within the application. Users cannot directly upload videos from their device.
Yes. The platform for prospective learners is called WAMinspire. It doesn’t link to the environment for current learners, which is called WAMedu, but it is the same technology. Prospective learners have access to the platform via a CSV file upload. Colleges use the version for prospective learners to keep them warm from the time of an enquiry to the day that the individual starts college. Prospective learners can use the platform to find out more about courses, ask questions and make friends prior to starting at the college.
Yes. Admins have access to a control panel which allows them to see every single post that has been put on the platform and an admin also has the ability to remove any post from an individual’s Wamfeed, or from within a group timeline. Posts that have been removed by learners/staff are also still visible for admins in the control panel. As well as an audit trail, an admin has a number other rights such as being able to block a user temporarily or permanently and being able to assign permission levels.
Yes, groups can be closed and therefore require an invite to join the group, or a password needs to be entered to join the group. During the setup process we can create all of your initial groups for you if you want us too. Open groups can also be created which anybody can join. These can be social groups related to clubs / societies at the college.
Yes. A lot of colleges create a closed “Virtual Staff Room” group to share best practice, raise awareness of issues, or just to notify all staff for things such as CPD activities. Staff can also create departmental groups which can be used to notify each other about issues such as classroom changes, equipment issues or even to get support when unsure about something.
Yes, files can be uploaded when using the platform from a web browser. Users can then view the files from within the downloadable app.
Yes, the college has a master account which can “blast message” every user. Some colleges use this solely for important notifications such as snow days (replacing costly text messaging), other colleges also use it as a way to engage learners in a positive way, eg. praising learners that have achieved an award. The tool can also be used to make learners aware of the support services available, eg. mentoring.

Technical

There are two ways to be setup.
1. Integrating the platform with your VLE. Therefore it would be a plugin on your VLE and all users would be authenticated the same way as they are when they use the VLE. To do this we will provide you with the plugins and the relevant documentation. It takes about 20 minutes to complete the process. We then connect the plugin to our environment, which takes about 10 minutes. In 30 minutes your setup will be complete.
Some colleges also want all the groups to be pre created prior to staff first using the platform. To do this we require a list of all the groups and rel- evant details and we take care of all this for you.
2. The second way to do a setup is via a CSV upload of all users and all groups. For this we would require a list of all the users and groups to be created for the initial setup and we complete the setup for you. On receipt of the list we can get the setup complete on the same day.
There are no specific technical requirements for the institution. We do all of the hosting and an end user can use the platform from a desktop via a web browser or they can install the downloadable app on an IOS, Windows or Android device. The user does not require a smartphone.
The data is cloud hosted and there is no cost to the institution or the users. We cover all costs.
Yes, we integrate with VLEs. This is done in a number of ways to create single sign on and easy access. It has also been proven that WAMedu improves the adoption of the VLE as staff mem- bers now have the ability to communicate with learners more effectively to make them aware that they need to access something from the VLE. For example exam results.
There is a downloadable app available for IOS, Android and Windows devices.
Yes. The platform can be used from a URL via a web browser. The web version is mobile responsive for different screen sizes. Users can access this by typing in their colleges WAMedu relevant subdomain in a web browser. Alternatively they can access it by clicking a plugin displayed on their VLE, which will send them to the relevant page, but with single sign on.
This will depend on the way the college currently authenticates their users if the WAMedu platform is to be linked to the VLE.
If there is no link to the VLE and the setup is done via a CSV file upload of all the users, then the users are authenticated via the information that is held for each user on the CSV. For example username and password. With the CSV upload setup, users can be required to change their password upon first login.
Setup is done via a CSV upload of all users and all groups. For this we would require a list of all the users and groups to be created for the initial setup and we complete the setup for you. On receipt of the list we can get the setup complete on the same day.

Marketing & Safeguarding

We work with your marketing team to build a strategy to communicate the benefits of the WAMBIZ platforms to all applicants, students, staff and parents. The strategy usually consists of a combination of email communication, staff training/awareness sessions, posters, flyers and digital screen displays around campus.
We customise and provide all marketing materials at no cost.
Yes. We provide posters that can be put around the campuses, as well as images that can be used on digital signs/screens, or screensavers on campus computers.
We also provide flyers that can be given to both staff and students. We are happy to customise any of the material and all of this is provided at no cost.
1.There are multiple permission levels.
a.Staff permission – All staff are identifiable as they have the word “staff” next to their display name.
b.Safeguarding team – This permission level means that the individuals marked with the “safeguarding team permission” will receive a notification if a user reports either a post or another user. This enables the safeguarder to deal with the issue and remove the post if necessary or block the offending user.
c. WAMadmin permission – Admins have access to a control panel which allows them to see every single post that has been put on the platform and they have the ability to remove any post from an individuals Wamfeed, or from within a group timeline. Posts that have been removed by learn- ers/staff are also still visible for admins in the control panel. As well as an audit trail, an admin has a number other rights such as being able to block a user temporarily or permanently and being able to assign permission levels.

2. All posts can be reported to the safeguarding team who have the ability to remove the post.

3. A user can report another user to the safeguarding team.

4. A user can block another user from communicating with them.

5. To have the ability to communicate with another user on a one to one basis, the other user must accept a connection request.

6. User access is controlled, either via the VLE authentication or via a CSV file authentication.

7. There is an inbuilt profanity or keyword flagging system which automatically flags any words used on a defined ‘blacklist’. The ‘blacklist’ is fully editable.
